Labour Law Section 200 is a codification of the common law rules for providing a safe place to work. Unlike Sections 240 and 241 that impose duties on owners and general contractors pursuant to statute, they have to either control the area where a hazard exists or they have to have supervisory control over you, the injured worker, for them to be responsible. Often, Section 200 is the catch-all in a case. If something isn’t governed by Sections 240 or 241, it may be covered by Section 200.
