Fordham, Bronx, NY (April 15, 2019) – A college student at Fordham University tragically fell to her death inside of a bell tower located on the property, according to authorities. The fatal unsafe property accident was reported to have occurred early on Monday morning, April 15th, at approximately 3:00 a.m.
Police stated that a group of seniors, including 22-year-old Sydney Monfries, at Fordham College at Rose Hill, are believed to have been climbing the inside of the Keating Clock Tower on campus in order to get a view of the city skyline. Monfries was reported to have climbed all the way to the top of the tower where she fell through a hole in one of the landings. Monfries fell approximately 30 to 40 feet.
Emergency medical crews, as well as the police, were notified and summoned to the scene, where they found Monfries on the ground with severe trauma to her head and body. She was immediately transported to St. Barnabas Hospital and was sadly pronounced deceased.
Students at the university and authorities are currently unsure of how Monfries and the group accessed the tower, which is supposed to be locked and off limits. Investigators are likely into all aspects of this incident.
