After being involved in a life-changing car accident, a woman wanted nothing more than to put the worst day of her life behind her. She was not looking for financial compensation as she knew there was no amount of money that could give her back what she lost that day. Instead, she only asked for the insurance company to replace the holiday attire she was wearing, which was ruined as a result of the accident, for personal, sentimental reasons. When the insurance company offered her a fraction of the value of the clothing, she refused the offensive offer and attempted to continue living her life without being consumed by the pain, frustration and grief stemming from the awful day.
Don’t Make the $1,000,000 Mistake
One year later, the woman attended a quilting conference in upstate New York with a friend. As can be expected when old friends get together, the two women reminisced about the past and caught each other up with the present. And as fate would have it, the friend revealed to the woman that she too had been in an unfortunate accident and recently received a seven-figure jury verdict after being represented by a law firm. While the woman had initially shied away from the prospect of litigation – hating the idea of having to relive the dreaded day over again – the notions of accountability and justice moved her. Upon her friend’s recommendation and support, the woman called the law firm and scheduled a consultation.
Within three years of the initial consultation, Hach & Rose, LLP attained a $960,000 settlement on the woman’s behalf. While money was never an incentive, it undoubtedly has aided the woman on her road to recovery – both physically and mentally. All too often, people hear that insurance companies will not be fair until forced. This cannot ring any truer in this instance – an insurance company’s refusal to reimburse an injured victim for clothing ended up costing them (almost) one million dollars, simply because they refused to be fair.
